Excellent May 8, 2007 Sewanee Resident (Sewanee, TN) 29 out of 29 found this review helpful
We took this bag from middle Tennessee to SW Florida and back. We encountered a considerable amount of rain and wind (for many hours). The items never shifted in the bag and they stayed bone dry. Not a drop of water was in the bag. The bag is very spacious. My car does not have a roof rack, but the long straps secured the bag very well. It measures 48 inches long by 38 inches wide. Make sure the dimensions fit your roof.
Worked Perfectly! April 18, 2010 M. Quessenberry (Tampa, FL) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
We bought this for our spring break trip this past week. We have a GMC Acadia and were using the 3rd row so we wanted as much space in the car as possible. We have the racks but no crossbars. I researched the reviews for different brands and came across this carrier. We are so happy we picked this one. We went from Tampa to Whittier, NC and back...a total of about 1300 miles and did not have one problem. The bag withstood rain with no problem - we read the instructions and followed them. The zipper flap must be down around the entire zipper and it must be towards the back of the car. If you put it on backwards, well then you are asking for problems. It's pretty hard for rain to get in if installed correctly to begin with! We had 5 small suitcases, a very large duffle bag, and a few pillows...with even more room inside if we had needed it. We did stop overnight on our way out and took everything out of the carrier and stored it empty in the car, which really was not as big of an ordeal as I thought it would be. Loading it again the next morning took all of about 5-10 minutes and we were off again. The manufacturer recommends NOT leaving it on your car empty because rain will get in the zipper if it's not full. I was more worried about vandalism in a strange town. I can't really say much about gas mileage because we just purchased this car a few weeks before our trip. However, we went approximately 340 miles on a full tank if that says anything. There was obvious wind noise from the carrier but no flapping noises. We tightened it down so tight, so it was not going anywhere! I would definitely recommend this. There are 2 sizes available and you can go to the manufacturer's website to check what size is best for your car.
TRULY Waterproof; Easy to Use July 25, 2010 MKO We bought this cargo carrier to use on a long roadtrip (over 10,000 miles and 25 U.S. states), from which we just returned. We have a Subaru Outback wagon with a side- and cross-bar roofrack, and the carrier worked great on this trip. Everything inside stayed completely dry without extra protection through several heavy rainstorms; the carrier fabric, zipper, and straps remain in good shape after 7 weeks of frequent loading and unloading and travel at highway speeds over mountain ranges, through deserts, and across a big range of temperatures, as well as bouncing around on back roads.
The RoofBag works best packed full - which reduces noise as well as wear and tear - and we found that filling the corners with soft odds and ends of baggage helped get a good wedge shape to minimize wind resistance. The strap fasteners are solid and easy to use. We ran a short bungee cord across the front of the bag to help keep the straps from drifting toward the sides of the car, and we added a small padlock to secure the zipper ends when we parked on the street or at a motel. Although the list price is higher, there are online sources selling the RoofBag for about $90 plus shipping.
The right tool for the job.. July 29, 2010 uggawuggawigwam I've had the Sears hardshell, I've had another soft-side carrier (disintegrated in the rain)...but this one is the best yet. It's listed as soft-sided but it does have a shape, making it easy to tell front/back and easy to position. Very heavy duty zipper. The best improvement is that it doesn't rely on hooks to the roof rack that can come off if there's slack. Instead you loop the strap through a loop built into the strap. The result is that you have a strong fabric loop AROUND the rack rail. That means that if you get a little slack in the strap, at most, the bag might slide a few inches. The exterior is more rubbery than fabric, so it shed the rain we experienced well. I didn't think the stiff nature of the sides would let me fit it back in the bag but I did manage to get it in. All-in-all great bag!
Great purchase! August 27, 2010 Claire Smith (Portland, OR) I bought this bag for my move from CT to OR. I loaded it with clothes and bedding to leave more room in my Jeep. It was easy to install and was able to hold a ton of stuff. Not once throughout the entire cross-country trip did I have to adjust the bag or tighten the straps. I did not notice any wind noise or even a significant decrease in my gas mileage even despite the bag being fully loaded with basically my entire wardrobe. We drove through several rain and dust storms on the journey and yet my clothes were dry and spotless when we arrived in Portland. Everyone in my family is now going to get one for future road trips. I would highly recommend getting this bag!
